Statement on Violence in Charlottesville
August 14, 2017
Lambda Theta Alpha condemns the violence that unfolded in Charlottesville, Virginia this weekend. As a sisterhood based on Unity, Love and Respect, we deplore any hate and intolerance in our communities.
The sorority extends its sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a full and speedy recovery to those injured during this horrific attack. We call on those responsible to be brought to justice.
Founded during a time of political turmoil, the sorority remains committed to its roots of social justice. We are grateful for the safety of our sisters at Gamma Alpha Chapter at the University of Virginia and stand with them in their demands to ensure that the campus remains a safe space for all students.
While this tragic event is not unique to Charlottesville, we urge our communities to continue to combat racism and fight for equality. Earlier this year, the sorority’s Political Education Initiative Committee compiled a racial justice toolkit for chapters to facilitate discussions within their own communities. The sorority also hosted a webinar on equity, diversity and inclusion. Empowering our sisters with these resources, we hope to affect change on a grassroots level.
As individuals, we have an opportunity to fight racism and prejudice in our daily lives. It is critical that we advocate for those who may face injustices at work, school or in the community. We call on everyone to reflect and challenge your own personal views and continue the dialogue to help influence the national conversation.
In Unity,
Board of Directors
