Lambda Theta Alpha Kickoffs Their Semicentennial Milestone Celebration with Historic Proclamation at New Jersey Statehouse

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TRENTON, NJ – December 19, 2024 – Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc.,  founded at Kean University in New Jersey as the first Latin sorority in the nation, celebrated the kickoff of its semicentennial anniversary with a momentous proclamation presentation at the New Jersey Statehouse yesterday. Sorority member and Assemblywoman Carmen Morales (Nu Chapter, Fall 1997)  issued a proclamation honoring Lambda Theta Alpha’s trailblazing legacy and officially recognized December as the sorority’s founding month.

The event marked a historic occasion, drawing more than 130 members from across the nation to witness this acknowledgment of Lambda Theta Alpha’s impactful presence in both the Latinx community and beyond. Joined by the sorority’s Board of Directors, Founding Members, First Line, and Advisors, members filled the Statehouse with energy and pride as the proclamation was presented. This tribute underscores the sorority’s mission of promoting cultural pride, academic excellence, political education, and community service.

“We are truly honored to receive this recognition and to celebrate Lambda Theta Alpha’s milestone anniversary in such a meaningful way,” said Rosie Diaz, National President of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. “This proclamation is a powerful affirmation of the tireless dedication and unwavering commitment of every sister who has ever worn our letters. Today, we stand proud as the first Latina sorority—our legacy marked by resilience and an unshakable commitment to uplift, empower, and lead. As we move forward, we do so with renewed purpose, knowing that our journey is not just about the past, but about shaping a brighter future for generations to come.”

The presentation, which took place just before the Statehouse’s afternoon voting session, provided members of Lambda Theta Alpha a special opportunity to stand together as their legacy was celebrated at the state level. The event also served as the official launch of the sorority’s year-long “Road to 50” campaign, which will include community events, philanthropic initiatives, and historical reflections leading up to the organization’s 50th anniversary in 2025.

Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. expresses its deep gratitude to Assemblywoman Carmen Morales,  and the State of New Jersey for honoring the organization’s contributions to the community and recognizing its leadership role as a cultural and educational advocate for Latinx women and the community at large.
