FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 10, 2023 – Lambda Theta Alpha joined over 200 organizations across the nation for the 8th annual I Stand With Immigrants Day of Action on October 25, 2023. Our participation reaffirms our ongoing support for immigrants from all backgrounds and our call for institutions to provide robust support to undocumented students, faculty, staff, and community members. According to FWD.us, for half a decade, an increasing number of undocumented students are ineligible for DACA, and DACA itself is facing threats; the need for institutional support is critical. The Supreme Court may decide on DACA’s legality in the coming year, adding to the uncertainty faced by current recipients.
Lambda Theta Alpha demonstrated its dedication to amplifying immigrant voices during a crucial period of congressional action for local community protection. With 41 chapters and areas actively engaged in events across campuses and communities nationwide, the membership comprised one of the largest contingents on this Day of Action. This campaign sparked dialogues on immigration, advocated for community support for immigrants, raised awareness of our shared history, and stood in unity with all immigrants advancing the nation’s growth. The National Political Education Initiative Committee (PEI) of Lambda Theta Alpha takes pride in its pivotal role in enabling chapter involvement by providing event support.
Why is this year’s initiative important?
In September 2023, Judge Andrew Hanen declared DACA unlawful, further complicating its legal challenges. This case may eventually reach the Supreme Court by 2025, raising uncertainty about DACA’s future. If Hanen’s decision is upheld, around 600,000 recipients could lose legal work status, potentially facing deportation and igniting broader immigration policy debates. DACA has been vital for families and young individuals who have built lives in their home country. The Supreme Court may decide its fate within the next two years, affecting those protected for over a decade. While Congress should establish a permanent pathway for DACA recipients and Dreamers, the Biden administration can take immediate steps to implement a comprehensive Dreamer Protection Plan.
Engaging in the I Stand With Immigrants Day of Action this year signifies a resolute commitment to advancing human rights within our immigrant community. The PEI committee commends our 41 chapters and regions for their unwavering dedication to addressing these critical issues.
